| Dating back to the first fatality in 1792, more than 17,000 officers have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. Yet despite the dangers and other difficulties of the job, there are more than 800,000 federal, state and local law enforcement officers serving proudly today in communities across America, putting their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. It is an incredible story of service and sacrifice that, for the most part, has gone untold. As a result, many Americans continue to take our police officers for granted. The National Law Enforcement Museum, due to open in 2009, will help to generate a better understanding and appreciation of the vital contributions our law officers have made to our nation. |
